Community Foundation Challenge—Emergency Food & Shelter

The Community Foundation Challenge—Emergency Food & Shelter is an effort to increase the ability of emergency food and shelter providers to meet the most basic human needs during these difficult times.

Last year, Starfish provided more than 313,000 meals to children and families in metropolitan Detroit and 1,500 nights of safe shelter for teens in crisis. On average, Starfish serves over a thousand children and families daily at our 15 service sites. Ninety-five percent of our programming, from Early Head Start and Head Start to the Family Success Program and the Parent Empowerment Program, involves at least one meal or snack for our clients. In addition, Starfish's Counterpoint Shelter & Crisis Center provides temporary, short term shelter for youth in crisis and longer term shelter for older youth through our transitional living program.

With support from the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Foundation, The Community Foundation of Southeastern Michigan is providing $1 million in matching grants for select emergency food and shelter providers. For Starfish, they will match $1 for every $2 donated up to $50,000. We thank all of you for your generous support. As of June 28th, Starfish has reached its goal to raise $100,000 to qualify for the matching grant of $50,000.
