Starfish Family Services is a private, nonprofit human service organization with more than four decades of experience helping at risk children and families.
Starfish supports vulnerable children and families with more than a dozen programs at multiple service sites throughout metropolitan Detroit. Starfish programs and staff create positive and lasting change by providing resources and assistance to the children and families who need it most and arming them with the tools for success. As a member of the Family Service Alliance for Southeastern Michigan, Starfish collaboratively works with other family service agencies to improve and monitor program quality, drive efficiency and provide greater access to those who need us the most.
The agency operates with a $13 million budget and a staff of 270 full- and part-time professionals; administrative expenses are 10.5 percent, covering IT equipment and expertise, administrative salaries, building maintenance and improvement, and other necessary costs of doing business.
All Starfish programs are nationally accredited by the Council on Accreditation.
Results
Starfish has positively impacted the lives of more than 9,000 at-risk children and families in the last year.
New Initiatives
After 46 years of working with families living in poverty, Starfish Family Services is using a new model to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty and create proven pathways to sustainable family success.
This concept, originally piloted from 2005-2008 as the Family Success ModelSM, is designed to move families from poverty to independence, helping them overcome barriers and learn the life skills needed for long-term success. Starfish entered a second phase of program implementation and evaluation in 2009, serving 90 families over the next four years.
The Family Success Model is part of a larger commitment by Starfish to impact the lives of at-risk children ages 0-5. We believe in the potential of all children and are committed to breaking the cycles of poverty to create long-term positive outcomes for children.
