INKSTER, Mich., May 11, 2011 – On May 1, 2011, Inkster-based Starfish Family Services (Starfish), a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating brighter futures for the children of at-risk families in metropolitan Detroit, launched a month-long campaign to raise money for “A Child’s Dream,” benefitting the 700 children under the age of five that Starfish serves each day. Starfish Chief Executive Officer Ann Kalass made the announcement.
The campaign will take place through May 31, 2011 and aims to draw attention to the most vulnerable children in southeast Michigan – those living in poverty. The campaign features videos of Starfish Head Start children sharing their favorite activities that help them prepare for kindergarten, such as reading and guided play. Money raised throughout the campaign will support Starfish programs and services, including education and enrichment programs for children ages 0 to 5 years, parenting classes, support services and programs to help families build paths out of poverty.
“Our early childhood programs provide countless benefits to children and families in poverty,” said Kalass. “Offering a warm, safe and rich environment, Starfish is able to help over 700 children each year get the right start to prepare them for kindergarten and give their growing minds and bodies the nourishment necessary for success. We need help from the community, friends and supporters to spread the word about our campaign so that we can continue to provide the same high level of educational opportunities to children that need it most.”
