Counterpoint Shelter & Crisis Center

What is the program?
The Counterpoint Shelter & Crisis Center helps families work through sensitive problems in a safe environment while offering temporary shelter and other counseling services to teens to help resolve family issues.

The center offers:
  • A shelter to provide youth with a safe place to stay for two weeks when they or their families experience crisis, abuse or homelessness
  • Individual and group counseling to help youth understand and cope with their problems, and to find healthy ways to deal with issues
  • Family involvement and counseling to help develop problem solving and coping skills to strengthen families
  • Prevention education to help resolve issues before they become serious problems
  • Weekly counseling for youth and families who still need help working through difficulties at home
Who can participate?
Youth ages 10 through 17 who have been asked to leave home or who are in crisis, at risk or have run away. Other eligibility requirements include:
  • Voluntary admission
  • Bed availability
  • Parent/Guardian participation
  • Maximum stay at the shelter is 14 days, referrals to follow-up care or long-term counseling are provided when needed
  • No adjudicated youth
  • Parental permission is required; if there is a risk of abuse or neglect, juvenile court order may be needed
Where and when does the program take place?
Counterpoint Shelter & Crisis Center in Inkster, Michigan is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Families must have their own transportation – the shelter is close to the Michigan Avenue Bus Line.
