Grow & Learn Garden

What is the Program?
The Grow & Learn Garden is a hands-on, eight-week structured program for children to learn about gardening. Lessons in plant science; ecology; math and measurement; commerce and sales; textiles and art; and nutrition are part of the curriculum.

Grow & Learn introduces children to gardening, nutritional cooking and taking produce “to market.” Each child engages in educational, fun and healthy outdoor activities, with opportunities for children to:

• Learn the basic principals of gardening
• Use measurements in a variety of ways
• Study soil make-up, nutrient requirements, and plant identification
• Practice good nutrition through preparing and eating healthy vegetables and fruit snacks
• Foster an appreciation of beauty and respect for wildlife and plants
• Observe how both teamwork and individual contributions are important to a thriving garden

Who can Participate?
Children from grades K-8; call for eligibility.

Where and When Does the Program Take Place?
Starting in mid-June, children participate one day per week for eight weeks at the Starfish organic garden in Inkster as part of a full-scale summer enrichment program.

Produce sales open to the community take place on Thursday afternoons from late July through September at the Starfish administrative building on Hiveley Road in Inkster.
