Transitional Living Program

What is the program?
The Transitional Living Program (TLP) offers homeless youth and young adults safe, stable, long-term living accommodations and an array of support to successfully transition to an independent adulthood.

Residential Services
TLP is a residential program offered through Starfish’s Counterpoint Shelter & Crisis Center in Inkster. A section of the shelter is designated for TLP’s monitored, self-sufficient living, which is set up much like a dormitory. Youth may have their own rooms or have a same-gender roommate, and may come and go independently. Meals are provided. Youth learn to manage the household duties needed to live on their own. They are also required to save the equivalent of three months rent. The ultimate goal is for youth to acquire their own apartment when they leave the program.

Independence Skill Building
While living at Counterpoint, youth help with laundry, cooking, shopping and chores, building practical life skills that will help them successfully move toward an independent living situation. The program teaches budgeting, problem solving, running a household, and seeking and maintaining employment.

Transportation
As part of the program, staff members train youth to use the SMART Detroit Public Transportation system.

Guidance and Resources
Counseling, case management and other support services help homeless youth develop the skills and personal characteristics needed for a successful transition to adulthood. Youth are provided physical, mental and dental health services; referrals to treat or prevent substance abuse; job training and placement services; and support and encouragement to continue their education.

Who can Participate?

Youth ages 16-21 who cannot live safely with a parent or relative and who have no other stable living arrangement can participate. Admission is voluntary with a maximum stay of 18 months. There are limited spots for homeless youth in the Starfish TLP program; call the program for availability and details.
